After I turned around at the end of the trail yesterday, I glimpsed a silhouette about 100 yards ahead. A runner, but where the heck did he materialize from? Could it be Mr Competitive? This was close to where he appeared before. Is he in fact a specter, condemned to jog the Bay Trail on moonless nights like a Flying Dutchman in running shoes? The things that pop into one’s head when running in the dark! But alas, I caught the newcomer up and it was not him. A pity, since I was about to start my second 20-minute tempo, giving him a whole new challenge to test himself against. Oh well.
I’m not fond of long tempos (is anybody?), and my mile splits showed it. I tend to lose focus for the second mile, then speed up again at the end. Within 5 seconds of target on average, but not what you’re supposed to do.
Now I’m mini-tapering for the 8-mile Brickyard on Sunday. Joe and I plan to do some extra mileage before and after the race to get the distance up to 18-20 miles. Then a three week taper before Big Sur.
My 7-day mileage just peaked at 75. That’s only slightly up from my maximum week before CIM but I kinda cheated that time by running 25 miles in a single morning (with breakfast at mile 20). I was a tired fellow that week. This time I have had two straight 70+ weeks, with no single run longer than 20.5 miles,.Feeling good. Bring it on!

Congrats on the mileage, that’s wonderful! I can’t stomach the thought of adding miles onto a race before or after so kudos to you for planning on that. Best of luck on the race, I look forward to reading all about it.

Thanks, Flo. I have not actually done it yet, of course, so we’ll see how it goes.
